The crupper is a security element of the saddle that prevents it from moving forward. It should never be tense, and it should have a soft lining so as not to cause friction on the horse's butt (the area where the tail begins). Marjoman uses top quality leather in the manufacture of its cruppers, and an especially soft leather for the round part so as not to harm the horse.
